Happy Monday, lovelies!
Unless you have been living under a rock, then you know that there is a highly anticipated film that is coming out on Friday… Marvel’s “Black Panther”. This film has generated so much buzz, broken ticket pre-sale records, and has already received such positive reviews. As an African American woman, this film means even more to me because I get to see superheroes that look just like me!
Accompanying the film is a curated album done by the one and only Kendrick Lamar. Filled with hip hop and r&b tunes, this album keeps with the theme of the film with some of the lyrics in each song (for example, “All The Stars” is a play on the characters use the stars to guide them), with sounds at the end of some of the songs reflecting walking through an African oddessy, and even introducing some of the characters like in “Paramedic!” by SOB x RBE. “Black Panther: The Album” features songs with heavy hitters such as The Weeknd, Khalid, Swae Lee, Schoolboy Q, Vince Staples, and 2 Chainz just to name a few.
Last week, the video for “All The Stars” featuring Kendrick Lamar and SZA was a testament to black beauty and power. Styled by Dianne Garcia and Ade Samuel, each look plays on past and present African style with head and body adornments, prints reflecting African culture, and even the men wearing finely tailored suits. These two ladies worked hard to keep with the bold themes of the film, and they definitely succeeded.
